DIET AND HEALTHY EYES

A HEALTHY DIET IS VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR BODY, AND OUR EYES.

A diet including fresh fruit and vegetables, will provide nutrients to our eyes which has shown to help prevent some eye problems. Spinach and red peppers have antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin which helps protect the eyes from age related macula degeneration. Carrots, which also contain lutein, are rich in beta-carotene. Beta-carotene can help protect from night blindness and cataracts.

Omega 3 has been shown to help reduce the risk of developing age related macula degeneration and can help manage dry eye syndrome in 4 out of 10 people. Flax seeds and oily fish such as sardines, mackerel and tuna are a good source of Omega 3.

Water is also very important to our general and ocular health. Drinking plenty of water is needed to maintain hydration of the body and eyes, and this is especially important in patients with dry eye problems. We know that alcohol can affect liver function, but research has also shown that alcohol can cause a drop in an antioxidant glutathione which helps protect the eyes from developing eye conditions.
